Exercise Overview

The physioball hamstring curl is a posterior-chain strengthening exercise that combines hip-extension control with dynamic knee flexion. The unstable surface of the physioball increases the demand for hamstring strength, pelvic control, and trunk stability throughout the movement.

The physioball hamstring curl may be used to develop:

  • Progressive hamstring loading during rehabilitation

The gluteal musculature and trunk contribute to maintaining hip and pelvic position during the exercise.

How to Perform

  1. Lie on your back with both heels positioned on top of a physioball.
  2. Lift the hips from the floor into a bridge position.
  3. Maintain the elevated hip position while bending the knees and pulling the ball toward the body.
  4. Pause briefly in the shortened position.
  5. Slowly extend the knees and roll the ball away while maintaining control.
  6. Repeat without allowing the hips to drop excessively.

Coaching Cues

  • Keep the hips elevated throughout the repetition.
  • Pull the ball toward you using the hamstrings.
  • Maintain a controlled pelvic position.
  • Move slowly during both the curl and return.
  • Avoid excessive lumbar extension.
  • Control the ball rather than allowing it to roll rapidly.

  • Allowing the hips to drop
  • Excessive lumbar extension
  • Moving too quickly
  • Losing control of the physioball
  • Using momentum to complete the curl
  • Reducing the range of motion as fatigue develops

Regression

Physioball Bridge Hold

Maintain the hips in an elevated bridge position with the heels supported on the physioball without performing the curl.

Another option is a standard floor bridge or hamstring walkout.

The physioball hamstring curl should not become a shortened-range knee-flexion exercise as fatigue develops. Maintain hip extension and control throughout the available range, and reduce volume or difficulty when the athlete can no longer maintain position.
